Broadkill
River Race Celebrates 8 Years at Milton’s Bicentennial
The summer of 2007 will see the Town of
Milton celebrate its Bicentennial, while it will also mark the 8th
Annual Broadkill River Canoe & Kayak Race. It is an exciting time
for the Town and for all those who appreciate Milton and its rich
history. This year’s Broadkill River Race, sponsored by Tidewater
Utilities, Inc., promises to be the most special to date, because
the 10-mile paddling competition will take place Saturday, August 4,
2007, during the weekend dedicated to the celebration of Milton’s
200th Anniversary. Organizers are expecting a huge weekend, with
more visitors expected into the Milton area than ever in its
200-year history! This will truly be a “once-in-a-Milton-lifetime”
opportunity for all who are associated with this special weekend and
this special event.
The Broadkill River Race has quickly become an August tradition in
Milton, and with every year, it has attracted more entrants,
spectators, and sponsors. At the inaugural race in 2000, only seven
(7) boats were officially registered, while 2006 saw a record 123
boats registered, with a record number of paddlers competing for
cash prizes and trophies. But more significant than the race’s
tremendous growth, is the consistency of the event’s purpose—to have
its participants enjoy a day of healthy exercise and friendly sport
along the scenic Broadkill River—all to benefit the non-profit,
Milton Theatre. The event is the historic Theatre’s major fundraiser
and is fundamental to the success of the facility’s operation as a
multi-use performing arts center, classic movie & second release
cinema house, and unique venue for community programming, in
downtown Milton.
Official sign-in & registration for
the race begins at 8:30 am at the Oyster Rocks Rd. landing (east of
SR 1 north-across from Eagles Crest Airstrip) outside of Lewes, and
racing will commence by boat category beginning at 10:00 am. Entry
fees are $20 for a single canoe or kayak and $35 for a 2-person
canoe or kayak. There is a women’s division in the single canoe and
single kayak categories only. The 10-mile course follows the scenic
Broadkill River northwest to Milton’s Memorial Park, where food and
craft vendors from the Town’s Bargain’s on the Broadkill will be
set-up to greet and refresh paddlers.
All registered racers receive
official ’07 tee shirts, this year sponsored by Atlantic Cabinetry
Corporation, Bayhealth Medical Center, Beebe Medical Center, County
Bank, Federal Street Financial Services, Frank Robino Companies,
Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant, Ryan Homes and Short Funeral Services.
Cash prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishers in all
categories with at least five entrants and trophies, this year
sponsored by Best Ace Hardware, Delmarva Power, Finish Line Car
Wash, Happy Harry’s and Dr. & Mrs. James C. White will go to the top
three finishers in each category. Paddlers supply their own boats,
but rentals can be pre-arranged by calling Quest Fitness at
302-644-7020. Van transportation from the finish point in Milton
back to Oyster Rocks Rd. landing will be available at the conclusion
of the race.
Sponsors, paddlers and even spectators who participate this year in
the 8th Annual Broadkill River Canoe & Kayak Race during Milton’s
200th Anniversary Celebration will become a part of Milton history.
So, come take a paddle on the historic Broadkill River or cheer on
those who do. Come support an event that is considered one of the
most respected races in competitive paddling circuits on Delmarva,
and a favorite of the recreational & nature-based sports enthusiast,
and help enable the Milton Theatre to continue its mission to
promote the arts, and showcase the Town of Milton. For more
information or to pre-register for the race, please call
302-684-3400.
